Chapter 18
Sophie
It was late, and Sophie had just poured herself a night-time cuppa. She often liked to gaze out the patio door at the twinkling solar lights she had dotted around, trying for magical. It had been a hell of a day. Petey showing up out of the blue, declaring his undying love, would have been mind-blowing had he actually had it in him to act remotely romantic, but no. He didnât declare much at all, more demand, or rather, expect.
Sophie was irritated to the core. Even her two choccy biscuits failed to lift her weary spirit. Everything was going so well until he rocked up, messing with her head, as usual.
What a cheek! I bet he didnât tell bumblebee butt he was coming to see me.
Could she go back with him? The thought lingered, squeezing air from her lungs. It was an easy option. At least with Petey she knew where she stood, but predictable was boring, and he had shown her what life looked like with him.
It never was moonlight and roses, was it? Blimminâ heck, what a waste. How did I plod along so long with him?
She wondered how many other people out there had partners who made them feel so lonely. If it could happen to her, it must be happening to others. Not all was what it seemed at first glance. She realized it was her efforts that kept them together all those years. His lack of commitment proved it. Oh, how could she have been so blind, and now she thought about it, he was always a tad flirty with women. When she thought about how friendly Ginny and Robson were, she could see the difference. They acted like brother and sister. Petey gave off come-to-bed vibes with his wandering hands and eyes.
A wave of misery washed over her. She could have had it all. A childhood sweetheart, marriage, children, their own home and business, but she chose the wrong man, then went on to stay with him even though he didnât help her build a life. In fact, Petey didnât even make the effort to feed her a fake future or fill her head with pipe dreams. Nope. He couldnât even be bothered to do that.
Perhaps it wasnât up to others to lift her to her goals. After all, sheâd done all right all by herself. Now she thought about it, she didnât have too much to grumble about in the grand scheme of things. She just wished she had been the one to walk away from Petey. Well, it was done now, and if he couldnât see that, he would one day, because there was no way she was taking him back. He did her a favour. All he had become was weight she didnât need to carry.
Sophieâs mind was made up. With or without Petey, or Matt, she was happy. Not only did she have a family business she loved, she had Grandad, friends, and the Happy to Help Hub, and now, thanks to her recent trip to Penzance, she had a food bank to open.
